With the growing interest in PlagScan’s stilometry tool Author Metrics to fight contract cheating but also to support students that stand out from their peer group, it is a given to put more resources behind that project — also see our blog post on the peer group similarity hypothesis. Therefore we decided to add Eric Lief to our team, a senior computational linguist. He will be responsible for moving the Author Metrics project forward and improve it even further.
The field of plagiarism detection caught Eric’s attention when applying for this job. He recently was involved in other projects leveraging artificial intelligence and deep learning to identify similarity in texts. When asked why he decided to join PlagScan, Eric answered: “The laid back friendly, welcoming atmosphere at PlagScan was immediately apparent.” But not just the working environment excited Eric. Our product itself intrigued him as well: “When I learned that PlagScan had an amazing product, was a major player in the industry, and was interested in exploring many of the same technologies as I was, I was hooked.”
The moment Eric started his work he dove deep into our stilometry tool and learned how the different modules comprising the PlagScan system worked. He quickly came up with ideas to improve the system and is helping to make an even better product out of it. “One of the major challenges I foresee will be putting into production some of these advanced cutting-edge models which need to scale and be almost in real time,” Eric said.
Growing up in the USA, Eric discovered early that he has a love for learning languages. He traveled the world extensively and already lived in seven different countries. Before he started working in the industry, Eric was a linguistics professor. Asked for what he likes to do in his spare time, he answered: “I love Latin dancing, cycling and outdoor ‘street fitness’ (calisthenics). I also enjoy learning languages, traveling, and cooking for others.”
We are excited to have Eric on board and are looking forward to improve our product together with his ideas.
