Since the introduction of guest accounts, we have been working hard to provide the best user experience for this valuable feature of the PlagScan product. Guest accounts are very limited PlagScan accounts that cannot run their own plagiarism checks (unless you allow them to run self-checks by providing a specific amount of PlagPoints). They are included with no additional cost for our PlagScan PRO customers. They are especially useful for schools and higher education institutions, as they allow a better overview of Assignments for students and the documents they submitted. In this blog post we are going to show you, how the so called “student view” looks, how guest accounts work, and how they can be used.
How to Set up Guest Accounts
Guest accounts can be set up by the administrator of a PlagScan PRO account. If you have not set up guest accounts yet, you can do so by navigating to the “Administration” menu and clicking on “Groups (Subdivisions)”. Click on the “Add group” button which opens a pop up window. Look for the section “Copy settings from (optional)” and among “Suggested profiles” select “Student group (Guest account)”. Now you can name your group and make some additional adjustments. Click on “Create group” to finalize this step. To allow users to “self-signup” via your plagiarism portal or a registration link, navigate to the “Administration” menu and click on “Global policies”. Go to the section “User permissions” and look for the setting “Assignment Submission Style”. Select “Submission requires a user account” in the drop down menu if it is not already selected (please note: submissions then are no longer available for users without account) and in the second drop down menu make sure to select “Self-signup into …” for the guest group you just created. Now users that register via your plagiarism portal or a registration link will automatically be assigned to your guest group with limited user rights. If you do not wish to do this you can still manually add users via the “Users” settings in the “Administration” menu. Just make sure to select the group for guest accounts you created.
The Student View
After signing up for a guest account, guest users will see a basic version of the PlagScan interface. This includes some account related settings and the Document Manager. Here students have an overview of all their submitted documents and, if allowed by the instructor, the respective PlagLevel/plagiarism report.
After clicking on “Submissions” in the Document Manager users can see an overview of all the submissions they are assigned to, including relevant information provided by the assigning person. The section “Assigned” lists all assignments that are open for submission, while “Completed” provides an overview of all completed assignments including the submitted documents and their current status. If an assignment allows resubmission, students can resubmit their documents via the drop-down menu. The “Submissions” as well as the “Documents” overview allows searching for assignments, so students with a multitude of assignments or drafts over time can keep track of everything.
This functionality perfectly ties into the use of PlagScan as a mini Learning Management System or “LMS Light”. Read more about this in our blog post “How to set up PlagScan as an easy-to-use ‘LMS Light’ with Assignments” and learn how to bring both features together.
